The name of Yangyang holds a meaning of a `Rising Sun`. As shown by the name, Yangyang provides hope and comfort for its dwellers.
Yangyang county is located in central Gangwon province along the east coast. It covers a total area of approximately 628.75 square kilometers and has a population of 28,917 with 1 town and 5 subcounties.
East of Yangyang county is a long, narrow plain that is 2 to 4 kilometers wide. The rugged Taebaek mountains stretch north to south along the west side of Yangyang county. Some mountains including Eungboksan and Yaksusan are in the southwest, Seoraksan and Jeombongsan in the north. They are forming a natural border line between Inje county and Hongcheon county.

Namdaecheon (stream), Seorimcheon, Mulchicheon, Hwasangcheon and Osaekcheon originate on from the surrounding mountains. Namdaecheon runs through Yangyang and has become a symbol of the peaceful town. The 39.5 km coastline is relatively smooth with the sandy plains along the coast offering perfect beaches.
National Road No.7 passes through typical farming and fishing villages. The salmon farm of Yangyang Inland Water Laboratory, Osan-ri Prehistoric Remains, Osan and Dongho Beach, and Susan Port are connected with county road 5.
Yangyang is a popular spot for mountain hikers, especially known for the beauties of southern Mt. Seoraksan. It is also famous for attractions such as the Songcheon Rice Cake Village, the clean Donghori Beach, and Mt. Seoraksan Osaek Village. Yangyang is particularly well-known for its pine mushrooms, popular for their health benefits, and displayed every year in the Songi Mushroom Festival.
Every year Yangyang hosts a wide range of colorful festivals such as Song-i Mushroom Festival, Salmon Festival and Sunrise Festival. For Instance, Salmon Festival held on the Namdae-cheon in autumn offers various cultural and cheerful experiences including the Salmon-catching with bare hands and outdoor performances.
Though Yangyang is a small county, the cultural importance of Yangyang is far greater than its size. In addition, Yangyang International Airport was opened at Hakpo-ri in April 2002.
