As indicated by the name of county, Goseong represents ¡®High Castle¡¯ in Chinese character. Goseong is very close to a number of high mountains such as the well-known Mt. Geumgangsan (1,638m) as well as Musan (1,319m) and Hyangnobong (1,293m).
Goseong is a county in Gangwon province, on the far north side of the province next to the sea and the border with North Korea. To the north of Goseong is the county of Tongcheon, to the south is the city of Sokcho, to the west is the county of Hoeyang, and to the east is the sea.

Goseong is located on the northernmost part of the East Sea and rarely traveled, contributing to its outstanding purity and cleanliness. Hwajinpo Beach, Hwajinpo Marine Museum, Wanggok Folk Village, and Geonbongsa Temple are all famous tourist spots. The Cheongganjeong Pavilion in Gwan-dong is particularly attractive for the harmony which it creates with the East Sea and the surrounding cliffs.
Unification Observatory which deepens the yearn for unification when looking at the Mt. Geumgangsan, the endless golden sand along the 56km coastline, the many bathing places, the magnificent autumn leaves blossoming in the mountains, the snow scope, and the beautiful ski slopes make Goseong county a worldly renowned tourist attraction all the time.
The climate of Goseong area is deeply related with Taebaek Mountains and the east sea. The feature of Korean weather is continuously cold in winter due to cold and dry northwesterly seasonal wind, and continuously hot in summer due to hot and humid north Pacific high atmospheric pressure. While Yeongseo area is severely cold in winter, Goseong in Yeongdong area is relatively warm. Also, while it¡¯s extremely hot in summer in Yeongseo area, Goseong, influenced by oceanic climate, is relatively cool. For that reason summer visitors keep increasing. There is a relatively large amount of precipitation during the autumn and winter. The average yearly temperature is 11.3¡É, the average in January is £2.5¡É, and the average during August is 24.1¡É. The average amount of precipitation over the year is 1,128.3mm.
Recently, thanks to the reconnection of inter-Korea railway, which was divided at the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone in more than half a century, Goseong is rising as a starting point of a unified Korea.
